“The city’s mine until I say otherwise.” That’s the chilling first line from Sean Bean’s new character — and it sets the tone for what’s being called one of the BBC’s most intense crime dramas in years.

Following his powerhouse roles in Time and Marriage, Emmy winner Sean Bean is stepping back into the underworld in This City is Ours, an eight-part thriller set in the gritty underbelly of modern-day Liverpool. With gang rivalries, collapsing empires, and a love story caught in the crossfire, the series promises a slow-burn explosion of ambition, betrayal, and violence.

The Plot: A Gang Falling Apart From Within

Bean stars as Ronnie Phelan, a brutal yet aging crime boss contemplating retirement after years of trafficking cocaine into Liverpool. But his right-hand man Michael Kavanagh (played by Strike’s James Nelson-Joyce) is the one we follow as the story spirals. Michael is loyal, ruthless — and in love for the first time in his life. That love, with newcomer Diana (Hannah Onslow), becomes both his salvation and his weakness.

When a critical shipment goes missing, internal chaos erupts. Ronnie’s own son, Jamie (Jack McMullen), decides to stage a coup, wanting to modernize and take over the empire. Now, Michael must fight for his life, the woman he loves, and the future he once thought he could never have.

“It’s about power — not the power to destroy, but the power to choose love over blood,” says showrunner Saul Dibb.

A Gritty Portrait of Power, Love, and Betrayal

This City is Ours draws comparisons to Peaky Blinders, but with a rawer, more contemporary pulse. At its heart, it’s a Shakespearean family tragedy — if Shakespeare had written about cartel turf wars, love triangles, and Liverpool’s docks.

The show’s setting — the streets of Liverpool — adds authenticity and a heartbeat to the story. It’s not just about crime. It’s about what happens when the line between family and foe disappears completely.
