“We’re desperate to do a second season.” That’s the bold statement Dept. Q star Matthew Goode made — and he’s not alone. As Netflix’s gripping crime thriller wrapped its haunting first season with more questions than answers, fans have been demanding to know: Will Carl Mørck return?
So far, Netflix hasn’t officially greenlit a second season of Dept. Q — but the signs are promising. The streaming giant submitted the series for Emmy consideration just two days before the deadline, suggesting confidence in its success. Meanwhile, creator Scott Frank, best known for The Queen’s Gambit, has made it clear: he’s already cooked up a “great idea” for where the story could go next.

Based on the 10-book series by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, Dept. Q has plenty of source material to work with. Frank hinted season 2 could center on The Absent One, a twisted cold case involving a double-murder, a mysterious prisoner, and a homeless witness being hunted by powerful forces. And just like season 1, it would intertwine a cold case with a fresh investigation — a signature of the Dept. Q formula.
But it’s not just plotlines that fans are eager to see return. Matthew Goode is all in for round two, praising Frank’s writing and expressing deep affection for the show’s Scottish setting. He even teased possible romance between Carl and therapist Dr. Rachel Irving (Kelly Macdonald) — or maybe even his estranged ex-wife.
Then there’s breakout star Alexej Manvelov as Akram, the enigmatic Syrian refugee who stole the show with his raw intensity and hidden past. Both Goode and Manvelov have said they want to explore Akram’s home life and inner demons if the series continues.
With unresolved tension, a breakout cast, and a showrunner with a plan, Dept. Q seems like it’s destined to return. The only mystery left? Whether Netflix will give the green light — or leave fans with another cold case.
