Olivia Colman and Paddy Considine in a twisty period murder mystery? You really don’t need to sell us much harder than that.

Long before Considine was causing chaos in MobLand and Colman was collecting an Oscar and casually becoming one of Britain’s most beloved actors, the pair appeared together in The Suspicions of Mr Whicher – and it’s exactly the kind of overlooked crime drama worth rediscovering.

Based on Kate Summerscale’s bestselling book The Suspicions of Mr Whicher or The Murder at Road Hill House, the drama first arrived on ITV in 2011 before returning for three further feature-length mysteries.

And with critics praising Colman and Considine as “superb”, plus a cast packed with faces you’ll almost definitely recognise, consider this your sign to add it to the watchlist.

The first instalment takes us back to Victorian England in 1860, where the brutal murder of a young child at a country house sends shockwaves through the nation.

Scotland Yard detective Jack Whicher, played by Considine, is sent to investigate… and quickly becomes convinced the killer isn’t a mysterious outsider but somebody much closer to home.

The problem? Proving it.

The story is inspired by a real-life murder case and follows Whicher as he navigates a household full of secrets, suspicion and people who aren’t exactly thrilled about having a detective digging into their private lives.

Three more mysteries followed, with Whicher leaving the Metropolitan Police and taking on cases as a private inquiry agent – because apparently Victorian retirement wasn’t an option when there were murders to solve.

Considine leads all four instalments as Detective Inspector Jack Whicher, bringing a suitably brooding energy to the pioneering Scotland Yard detective.

Olivia Colman joins him as Susan Spencer in 2013’s The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: The Murder in Angel Lane.

And they’re far from the only big names involved.

The original drama stars Peter Capaldi, Tom Georgeson and Alexandra Roach, while later instalments feature actors including Mark Bazeley, Helen Bradbury and John Heffernan.

Basically, it’s one of those dramas where you’ll spend half the runtime solving the mystery and the other half trying to work out where you recognise everyone from.

Originally made for ITV, all four feature-length mysteries now are available to stream on Prime Video in the UK, making this a particularly easy one to settle into over a weekend.

The instalments are The Murder at Road Hill House, The Murder in Angel Lane, Beyond the Pale and The Ties That Bind.
