If there was one TV show that came to define 2025, it was undoubtedly Adolescence. Netflix’s four-part drama about a teenage boy who killed his female classmate became an award winning series that opened up conversations around masculinity, violence and online culture. And now the two Adolescence series leads, Stephen Graham and Ashley Walters, are reuniting for a new movie that is set to be one of the biggest of the year.

Animol is a new gripping prison drama that comes out in cinemas later this autumn and focusses on a juvenile detention centre and a young man called Troy who is tested from the moment he enters its walls.

Intrigued to find out more? Here’s what to know about Animol.

What is Animol about?

Animol is the directorial debut from Ashley Walters, who is best known for his roles in Top Boy, Missing You and Adolescence.

The movie centres on a young man named Troy (Tut Nyuot) who is sent to a juvenile detention centre and is instantly thrust into a world of gang culture, danger and loyalty. His cellmate is volatile and tests Troy constantly, however things start to slightly look up when Troy forms a bond with fellow prisoner Krystian (Vladyslav Baliuk).

Stephen stars in the series as a welfare officer who is there to support the young offenders.

Though the movie is yet to hit cinemas, early reviewers of the film have highly commended the feature film, with Digital Spy calling it a “must-see British drama”, TimeOut said it was “exhilarating” and Radio Times described it as an “impressive, confident debut from Walters.”
