IT’S OFFICIAL: Princess Charlotte Set to Inherit Diana’s £400k Spencer Family Heirloom Tiara, Bypassing Lilibet in the U.S.

Princess Diana famously chose her own family’s Spencer Tiara for her 1981 wedding to then-Prince Charles, rather than selecting a piece from the royal collection. The dazzling diamond headpiece, now estimated to be worth around £400,000, has become one of the most iconic royal heirlooms in history.

Since Diana’s passing in 1997, the tiara has rarely appeared in public and has remained securely under family care. While Princess Kate and Meghan Markle have paid homage to Diana in their fashion, neither has publicly worn the Spencer Tiara.

Now, the next generation of royal women may bring this historic piece back into the spotlight. Princess Charlotte, daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales, is reportedly set to inherit the Spencer Tiara, placing her ahead of Princess Lilibet, daughter of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Jewellery expert Maxwell Stone from Steven Stone Jewellers told the Daily Express: “The chances of Princess Charlotte or Princess Lilibet wearing the Spencer Tiara one day are certainly possible, though several key factors influence this decision.”

He clarified that the tiara is privately owned, not part of the Crown Jewels, and most likely remains in the possession of Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother and 9th Earl Spencer.

Stone continued: “Princess Charlotte is more likely to wear the tiara, as she is a central figure in the royal family and embodies her grandmother’s legacy publicly. It’s a fitting and symbolic choice for future significant occasions, particularly a wedding.”

In contrast, Princess Lilibet, while sharing the same lineage, is raised outside traditional royal circles, which makes access to the tiara less straightforward. Its most recent public appearance was in 2018, worn by Diana’s niece Celia McCorquodale on her wedding day.

A Timeless Piece of History

The Spencer Tiara originally belonged to Diana’s father, John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, and was gifted to Diana’s grandmother, Countess Cynthia Spencer, in 1919. It has been passed down through generations, with Diana herself famously wearing it on repeat throughout her life.

Maxwell Stone described it as “intricately crafted, featuring diamond-encrusted motifs of tulips, scrolls, and stars. Assembled from older jewellery pieces, it carries both uniqueness and charm.” Though no official valuation exists, he estimates the tiara’s worth at £400,000, highlighting its exquisite design and sentimental significance.
