The Whisper Man arrives on Netflix as a dark and unsettling thriller built around a terrifying question: what happens when the crimes of a notorious killer begin again years after he was imprisoned?

The story follows retired detective Pete Willis, played by Robert De Niro, who is pulled back into an investigation after his estranged son, Tom Kennedy, played by Adam Scott, discovers that his young son Jake has been kidnapped.

The situation becomes even more disturbing when the crime appears to mirror the methods of the infamous Whisper Man, Frank Carter, played by Michael Keaton.

Carter was responsible for a series of child murders and had already been behind bars for years. So the obvious question is: who is copying him?

For much of the film, suspicion falls on the possibility that Carter may have had an accomplice who escaped justice.

But the truth is even darker.

Tom and Pete eventually discover the remains of the original Whisper Man’s fifth victim hidden inside a concealed section of Tom’s house. They also uncover the body of the property’s former resident, Dominic Barnett.

Their investigation leads them to Norman Collins, a crime-obsessed neighbour who admits that Carter had previously directed him toward Barnett.

Collins had been desperate to locate the remains of Tony, one of Carter’s victims. Carter had apparently used that information as leverage to maintain a connection with someone outside prison.

But Collins never gets the chance to explain everything.

Before he can reveal the full story, he takes his own life.

That leaves Pete and the others to piece together the final clues themselves.

And then comes the film’s biggest revelation.

The new Whisper Man isn’t a mysterious accomplice.

It is Francis Carter Jr., Frank Carter’s own son.

Francis has been recreating his father’s horrific crimes because he desperately wants the approval of the man who abused and traumatised him during his childhood.

The revelation transforms the entire mystery. Francis isn’t simply copying his father — he is trapped in a horrifying attempt to earn recognition from the person who damaged him most.

The investigation eventually leads Pete, Tom and Detective Amanda Beck to Francis’ psychologist’s home.

What they find there is horrifying.

Francis and his therapist have been brutally attacked, but Jake is also inside the house.

Beck manages to fight Francis long enough for Jake to escape, but Francis stabs her before chasing after the boy.

Then Pete arrives.

The retired detective confronts Francis one final time and is fatally stabbed during the struggle.

Knowing he may not survive, Pete uses his final moments to protect his grandson, ordering Jake to run.

Jake manages to fight back and leaves Francis incapacitated until he can be arrested.

Beck and Francis survive.

Pete does not.

His final act becomes the ultimate sacrifice — saving the grandson he had desperately fought to protect.

But the film has one final mystery.

Throughout the story, Jake repeatedly sees a strange young girl wearing a blue jumper.

At first, it seems possible that she is simply part of his imagination.

Then Tom discovers an old photograph of his late wife as a child.

She looks almost identical to the girl Jake has been seeing.

And that raises one last unsettling question:

Was Jake really seeing a ghost — or was something else connecting the girl to his mother’s past?

The film deliberately leaves that mystery open, giving The Whisper Man an eerie final layer even after the identity of the killer has been exposed.

The result is a thriller where the biggest revelation isn’t simply who the killer is, but why he became one — and how far the damage caused by Frank Carter continues to spread.
