Few things beat settling down on the sofa and diving into a gripping Netflix series – whether it’s packed with unexpected twists, high-octane drama, or simply something easy-going that doesn’t require you to follow a complicated storyline.

The sheer volume of content available on streaming platforms can make choosing what to watch a bit of a headache. But fortunately, one series consistently rises above the competition. Despite having been on the platform for some time, streaming fans insist it remains essential viewing.

Among the responses, one title that generated enormous excitement was ‘Mindhunter’, with viewers declaring it had them utterly hooked.

Mindhunter is a psychological crime thriller available on Netflix, created by Joe Penhall and produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron.

Set during the late 1970s and early 1980s, the show draws inspiration from real events, adapting the true-crime book “Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit” by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The narrative centres on two FBI agents, Holden Ford and Bill Tench, who operate within the Behavioural Science Unit.

They are trailblazers in criminal profiling, seeking to comprehend the psychology of serial killers during an era when such concepts remained novel and contentious.

Supporting them is Dr Wendy Carr, a psychologist who assists in structuring their research whilst managing the academic and bureaucratic obstacles they encounter.

Mindhunter examines in detail the agents’ conversations with imprisoned murderers, investigating their motivations and the recurring themes within their offences.

These exchanges are gripping and frequently disturbing, yet the series focuses less on explicit violence and more on the psychological intensity and intellectual quest to grasp what compels individuals to perpetrate heinous crimes.

The programme is painstakingly constructed, with considerable attention paid to period-authentic elements, from wardrobe and production design to the prevailing social attitudes of that time.

Nevertheless, according to fans, this precision may explain why only two seasons were produced, as it became “very costly due to the time period it was set in”.
