A stacked cast including Helen Mirren and Timothy Spall is at the heart of Netflix’s Christmas tearjerker Goodbye June, which has just released a first trailer. The British film, set to arrive during the festive season, marks Kate Winslet’s directorial debut.
Written by Joe Anders, Winslet’s son with director Sam Mendes, Goodbye June is a festive family rollercoaster centred on June, the eponymous matriarch played by Mirren.
When her health takes a turn for the worse, her family rally around her as her husband (Spall) and their four adult children navigate the potential loss just before Christmastime.
Coming to Netflix on Christmas Eve after a run in select cinemas from 12 December, Goodbye June also stars Winslet, Toni Collette, Andrea Riseborough and Johnny Flynn as June’s kids.
As their mum tries to keep positive as she’s reaching the end of her life, the siblings have to deal with petty disagreements and old feuds.
The trailer sees Winslet and Riseborough’s characters being at odds with each other as her mother attempts to help them make up.
“I love you all so much, but I love you twice as much as you love each other,” June says in a scene.
Meanwhile, as Collette’s character blames everything on Mercury retrograde, the only brother in the family, played by Flynn, is fed up with his sisters’ fallout.
“You two need to sort your shit out cause you’re sisters,” he tells them at the hospital.
Goodbye June echoes another emotional festive movie, 2005’s The Family Stone, with late acting legend Diane Keaton in the role of Sybil Stone, a woman battling an illness as her adult children all cope in different ways.
Keaton was joined by an all-star cast, with Rachel McAdams, Luke Wilson, Dermot Mulroney, Elizabeth Reaser and Tyrone Giordano in the roles of Sybil’s children.
The Family Stone also starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Claire Danes as two sisters with romantic ties to the family.
Goodbye June releases in select cinemas from 12 December, and will become available to stream on Netflix from 24 December.
