I was just seconds away from pulling the trigger…But that night, everything changed. I collapsed to my knees on the cold garage floor, completely broken and desperate, and screamed from the depths of my soul: “God, if You exist, prove it! Save me from this hell!”

At that moment, I had no idea a secret from the past was about to be revealed—a dusty old letter from my fallen comrade that I had never opened…

…And suddenly, an inexplicable peace flooded over me—like the weight of the world had been lifted. It felt as if Jesus Himself had stepped into that dark room and wrapped His arms around my shattered soul. My heart raced, but not from fear anymore. Trembling, I reached for the old box of war mementos tucked in the corner. Inside was a letter from Mike, my best friend who had died right beside me in Iraq. He wrote it before our last patrol: “John, if I don’t make it back, remember this: God hasn’t abandoned you. I found Him in the foxhole, through Psalm 23: ‘Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil…’ Open your Bible, brother—you’ll see.”

With shaking hands, I pulled out the dusty Bible Mike had given me years ago. I flipped it open, and there it was—Psalm 34:18 glowing as if lit from within: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Those words hit me like a lifeline straight from heaven. From that instant, faith began pulling me out of the darkness. But the journey wasn’t easy—nightmares came roaring back, temptations to drown in alcohol returned, and I even survived a near-fatal car accident that felt like one last test. Each time, God sent signs: a stranger at a coffee shop sharing a similar story and inviting me to church, a dream of Mike smiling and saying “Keep going, brother,” and slowly, through a Christian veterans’ support group, I learned to forgive—myself, the war, and to trust that God had a bigger plan.

I started sharing my story at church meetings, and amazingly, other vets reached out. One guy from Afghanistan confessed: “You saved me from ending it all—God spoke through you and gave me hope.” Now, I’m not just surviving—I’m truly living: remarried to a woman who prays with me, volunteering to help other veterans, and waking up every morning with gratitude. From the foxholes of Iraq to that dark garage, God turned my pain into purpose.

But the story doesn’t end there—recently, I discovered another secret in Mike’s letter: an address for a small church back home where he had prayed before deployment. I went there, and what I found changed everything once more… (Let me know if you want the continuation!)
