SHREVEPORT, La. — Eight children between the ages of 1 and 14 were killed and two adult women were wounded in a domestic-related mass shooting early Sunday in Shreveport, according to police. Authorities said 10 people were shot in all, and the suspect was later killed by Shreveport police after a pursuit that ended in Bossier City.

Police said officers were first called just after 6 a.m. for reports of gunfire, but responding officers quickly determined they were dealing with a domestic disturbance that had turned into a mass shooting across multiple locations. Investigators said some of the children were related to the suspect, and Louisiana State Police are now handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting that ended the chase.

Former Constable Patrick Young identified the suspected shooter as Shamar Elkins.

A Shreveport police report narrative dated March 18, 2019, and reviewed by East Texas Banner, shows Elkins was previously arrested in a weapons case after officers said he fired multiple shots near Caddo Magnet School while children were outside on school grounds. According to the report, officers recovered shell casings and determined that at least one projectile traveled through a shed and struck or ricocheted near the school boundary where children had been present.

The same report says Elkins told officers he had fired about five shots at a vehicle, was taken into custody, and was booked into city jail. The report also states that officers recovered a Ruger 9mm handgun from the residence as evidence.

Police have not publicly announced a motive in Sunday’s mass killing. Authorities have said only that the case appears to have stemmed from a domestic disturbance and that the scene is one of the most extensive investigators have encountered.

Louisiana State Police said no officers were injured in the Bossier City shooting and asked anyone with pictures, video, or information to contact detectives. The names of the child victims had not been publicly released Sunday afternoon as family notifications and the investigation continued.
