 In a rare and emotional interview with Dutch media, “The King of the Waltz” André Rieu opened up for the first time about what he called the most traumatic moment of his decades-long career performing around the world.

“It happened in Buenos Aires, Argentina,” Rieu began. “We were on a South American tour, and it was supposed to be a magical evening. But just hours before the show, I got the call — my mother had passed away.”

He described breaking down in tears in his dressing room. The entire orchestra waited in complete silence, unsure whether the concert would go on. Rieu stood at a crossroads: cancel the performance or walk onto the stage as if nothing had happened.

“I chose to play. Not because of the contract. But because I knew my mother would have wanted me to.” His voice trembled. But the moment he picked up his violin, his right hand suddenly seized up, overcome by stress and emotional shock.

“I couldn’t move the bow. My hand was trembling. I have never been that terrified in my entire life.”

That night’s concert continued, but Rieu was only able to perform for part of the show. The rest was played by the concertmaster. Afterward, he was forced to take a three-month break from performing, undergoing both psychological counseling and physical therapy to regain strength and control in his arm.

That experience, he says, forever changed how he approaches music and life: “I’m no longer invincible. I’m a son. A man. And an artist who knows how to cry.”
