In an emotional interview marking the 30th anniversary of the Johann Strauss Orchestra, world-renowned violinist André Rieu paid tribute to the man who shaped his destiny more than anyone else — his father, a legendary conductor in the Netherlands.

“My father was strict, disciplined, and demanded perfection. But he was also the first to recognize that spark in my eyes whenever I picked up a violin,” Rieu recalled.

As a child, Rieu once sneaked into the storage room and played his father’s violin in secret. But instead of punishment, his father simply stood quietly behind the door, listening. “When I finished playing, he walked in and said: ‘If you’re going to play, then learn to do it right. But never play with technique alone — play with your heart.’”

That single sentence, Rieu said, has followed him his entire life.

Although his father passed away when Rieu was still young, he says he can still feel his presence during every performance. “Every time I stand on stage, I imagine him sitting in the front row — nodding when I get it right… and frowning when I overthink it.”

One especially touching detail Rieu shared is that he still carries a keepsake from his father to this day: an old, worn orchestral score, with a handwritten note in the margins that reads, “Never forget — emotion is the only thing that lasts.” That score travels with Rieu everywhere — from Vienna to Tokyo — tucked safely in his tour case.

“My father didn’t leave me wealth. He left me a legacy.” Rieu said, his voice heavy with emotion.
