Kevin Costner Wasn’t the First Choice for Yellowstone’s John Dutton — But the Role Was Almost Robert Redford’s

Kevin Costner was already a well-established Western icon long before he stepped into the boots of John Dutton on Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone. With major credits like Dances with Wolves—which he directed and starred in—and Wyatt Earp, Costner had proven his command of the genre. So when Sheridan began developing Yellowstone, it made sense for Costner to be in the running for the lead. But surprisingly, he wasn’t the first choice—at least not from HBO’s perspective.

The Role That Was Almost Robert Redford’s

In the early stages of Yellowstone’s development, Sheridan pitched the series to multiple networks, and it briefly landed at HBO. At that time, Sheridan had Kevin Costner in mind to play John Dutton, but HBO executives weren’t convinced. While they agreed the role needed a major name, they had someone else in mind: Robert Redford.

According to Sheridan, HBO told him, “Get Robert Redford, and we’ll greenlight the pilot.” Redford, famous for his roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Jeremiah Johnson, seemed like a natural fit. Sheridan approached him at Sundance Film Festival, and Redford agreed to the role.

But when Sheridan reported the good news, HBO executives were far from pleased. One senior vice president allegedly responded, “We meant a Robert Redford type,” not Redford himself. The issue, according to Sheridan, came down to Redford’s age—he was around 80 at the time. Ironically, years later, Harrison Ford—also in his 80s—would star in 1923 as Jacob Dutton, to widespread acclaim.

A Missed Opportunity That Led to the Perfect Fit

Following the awkward misunderstanding, Sheridan had to break the news to Redford. With help from HBO’s former programming president Michael Lombardo, they attempted to soften the blow. Meanwhile, the project languished in HBO’s development pipeline. Sheridan claims one executive felt Yellowstone was a “step backwards” for HBO because of its rural setting in Middle America and concerns about Beth Dutton’s brash personality.

Eventually, HBO passed on the show. That opened the door for Paramount Network, which picked up the series—and with it, Kevin Costner officially stepped into the role of John Dutton.

Costner’s portrayal went on to define the character and anchor the series. His commanding presence and complex performance helped Yellowstone ignite a modern Western TV renaissance. And while Redford may have brought gravitas to the role, Costner’s balance of grit, charisma, and vulnerability proved to be exactly what Sheridan’s vision needed.

Behind-the-Scenes Tensions and Costner’s Exit

Despite the success, things weren’t always smooth behind the scenes. Costner shocked fans when he announced he would exit the show during Season 5, after ongoing speculation about his involvement. Reports suggest Costner had long been uncomfortable with the show’s direction, dating back to Season 2. Sheridan’s team claimed the actor asked for a reduced filming schedule to work on his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga. Costner, meanwhile, said he had to delay Horizon while waiting on scripts from Sheridan.

In the end, creative tensions and scheduling conflicts led to a messy split between the show’s star and its creator. But for fans, Costner’s performance as John Dutton remains iconic—a result of both serendipity and persistence. And perhaps, the unexpected detour through HBO and Robert Redford was the necessary path to get there.
