Meghan Markle Sparks Outrage by Using Banned Royal Title HRH
Meghan Markle has shocked royal watchers after reportedly using the royal style “HRH” (Her Royal Highness) despite being explicitly barred from doing so by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The controversy erupted after Meghan was said to have included the HRH title on a gift sent to billionaire entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima. The move has reignited anger in the UK, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex formally agreed in 2020 not to use the HRH title after stepping back as senior working royals.
At the time, Buckingham Palace made the position clear, stating:
“The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.”
However, sources quoted by Page Six claim that Harry and Meghan have continued to use HRH privately. According to those sources, the Sussex household — including Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet — allegedly has the HRH title printed on personal stationery and household items.
Sources also claim that Meghan keeps a list of acceptable forms of address, ranging from “Her Royal Highness” and “Princess Meghan” to “Duchess Meghan” and “The Duchess of Sussex.”
One palace source told Page Six that Prince Harry, now 40, considers the restriction on using HRH “ridiculous,” arguing that he was born with the title. The source added that Harry and Meghan are said to use HRH while travelling and during overseas visits, and reportedly expect staff to address them as “Sir” and “Ma’am.”
“Meghan enjoys the royal status,” the source said, “but it doesn’t really fit in America. It’s strange to insist on calling your team a ‘private office’ and demanding to be addressed as ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’am’. Why not simply ask to be called Meghan?”
Another source was more blunt, stating:
“For someone who has claimed she was deeply unhappy and oppressed by royal life in the UK, Meghan still goes out of her way to exploit her royal status whenever possible.”
The renewed HRH controversy has also fuelled speculation that Prince William may move to formally strip Harry and Meghan of their remaining titles once he becomes king. One source claimed William “has no time for Meghan.”
Royal author and longtime royal associate Hugo Vickers criticised Meghan’s behaviour, saying:
