Just when the bullying allegations against Meghan Markle appeared to be fading into royal history, her own defence has dragged the controversy violently back into the public eye — and this time, it has turned into a public spectacle.

Appearing on the BBC on November 29, Meghan’s lawyer Jenny Afia of Schillings attempted to shut down claims that the Duchess of Sussex humiliated and bullied palace staff, leaving them frightened and emotionally distressed. Instead, her remarks have sparked widespread ridicule, anger, and renewed suspicion across Britain.

Afia insisted there were “major inaccuracies” in the allegations and categorically denied that Meghan had bullied anyone. She urged the public to “understand what bullying really means,” defining it as the repeated misuse of power intended to cause physical or psychological harm.

“The Duchess of Sussex completely denies doing that,” Afia said, before adding a line that immediately raised eyebrows: Meghan would not deny “anyone’s personal experience.”

The contradiction did not go unnoticed.

When pressed on whether Meghan could provide evidence to support her denial, Afia made a startling admission that critics say unravelled the entire defence.

“It’s extremely difficult to prove a negative,” she said. “If you haven’t bullied someone, how do you prove you haven’t?”

Within hours, social media erupted.

Viewers accused Meghan’s legal team of talking in circles, insulting public intelligence, and offering legal wordplay instead of answers. Many questioned how a lawyer could so confidently deny events she did not witness, relying entirely on Meghan’s version of events.

“How does she know Meghan didn’t bully staff when she wasn’t there at the time?” one commenter asked.

“Is she simply repeating what Meghan tells her?” another wrote.

Others highlighted what they saw as an irreconcilable contradiction: denying bullying outright while simultaneously refusing to challenge the experiences of staff who say they were left terrified.

The backlash has reopened a long-simmering chapter from Meghan’s brief but turbulent time inside the Royal Family.

In reality, less than a year after marrying Prince Harry, multiple members of Meghan’s staff abruptly resigned. At the time, palace insiders alleged an atmosphere of intense pressure, unreasonable demands, and a culture where aides were expected to obey without question.

Prince Harry himself once encapsulated the dynamic in a now-infamous remark:

“What Meghan wants, Meghan gets.”

Fuel was added to the fire by Jason Knauf, the Sussexes’ former communications secretary, who has repeatedly challenged the couple’s public narrative. Knauf alleged that Meghan’s behaviour left staff “shaking with fear” and claimed that formal complaints were raised to protect young female employees who were being reduced to tears.

Knauf later went on to expose evidence that Harry and Meghan had cooperated with authors of Finding Freedom, despite Meghan initially denying any involvement. She later admitted the truth, explaining that she had “forgotten.”

Royal biographer Andrew Morton, author of  Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, has also cast a harsh light on the Sussexes’ expectations. Speaking to the Express, Morton argued that the couple consistently demanded more than the institution could provide.

“They wanted fame,” Morton said, “but what they struggled with wasn’t celebrity — it was status.”

According to him, both Harry and Meghan were deeply frustrated by their lower ranking within the royal hierarchy, disappointed by financial limitations, and resentful of what they perceived as insufficient institutional support.

As Britain revisits these allegations once more, the timing is impossible to ignore. What was once framed as a closed chapter now feels unfinished, unresolved, and increasingly uncomfortable for the Palace.

And as the public watches this defence unravel, one question grows louder:
