Though Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s 2018 wedding was the culmination of a real-life fairytale, planning it was not without complications—at least according to veteran royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith. Indeed, according to the author, Queen Elizabeth II felt “left out” in the lead-up; three months before he said “I do,” her grandson was reportedly “rude” to her for “10 minutes,” leaving her “very worried” about him.

Bedell Smith listed several reasons for the late monarch’s concern on her Substack “Royals Extra,” per Page Six. First, she was “dismayed” that Harry had asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to perform the ceremony without getting permission from the Dean of Windsor. Furthermore, she was also confused as to why Markle would not reveal the details of her wedding dress before the big day.

Finally, Bedell Smith noted a third cause for concern: namely, that Markle and Prince William and Kate Middleton were “not working well together,” an observation that unfortunately foretold their current estrangement.

Bedell Smith found out this information from her friend—and the Queen’s cousin—Lady Elizabeth Anson, who died in 2020, two years before Queen Elizabeth’s death at age 96 on September 8, 2022. The phone call took place in February 2019, one year after the alleged incident took place.

The good news? The Queen and Harry “patched things up” after their February tiff in April 2018, just one month before the latter said “I do.” Two years later, however, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from senior royal duties and left the U.K. Relations with the British royal family subsequently went from bad to worse following the release of the couple’s Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan and Harry’s bombshell memoir Spare.

“There’s no going back,” royal reporter Omid Scobie told People in 2023. “In the eyes of some within the institution, Harry is a threat to the crown. His freedom to exert his own thinking outside of the confines of the institution has made him the enemy.”
