As I exited the truck, the officer remained facing me. Wanting to remove any doubt or concern, I asked if he would like to search me for other weapons so he could feel completely safe. He appreciated the offer and asked if there were any other firearms or weapons in the vehicle. I assured him there were not.

He then conducted a brief search and retrieved my handgun. He asked for permission to take my driver’s license and carry permit from my wallet, and I consented without hesitation. I even offered to let him search the rest of my truck if necessary, but he declined.

Once everything was cleared, the officer returned my firearm. I told him he could place everything on the driver’s seat and that I would retrieve it after we were finished. I thanked him sincerely for remaining calm and professional, especially given the presence of a legally carried weapon. He thanked me in return for my cooperation and asked me to sign the warning ticket, reminding me to take care of my registration soon.

Before leaving, I made a point to thank both officers for their service and wished them safety, especially considering everything happening in the world today. I explained that those very events are why I choose to carry a firearm. We shook hands, they handed me the warning, and I continued on my way.

In the wake of the tragic events in Dallas and Baton Rouge, I chose to handle this encounter in the way I believed was right—with honesty, respect, and calm.

The lesson here is simple: safety and respect matter. When you treat others with dignity, you often receive the same in return.
