Hereâs why fans think Colin Jost and Michael Che are leaving âSNLâ after Season 51
Goodbye from New YorkâŚ
Some âSaturday Night Liveâ fans believe that current âWeekend Updateâ hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che are planning to depart after the current landmark Season 50.
Neither Jost, 42, nor Che, 41, has officially spoken out or confirmed the rumors.
In February, Che said of the sketch show, âIâm not coming back, donât worry,â during a stand-up show at the University of Rochester.
He added, âIâm done, itâs over for me. Itâs been so much fun. Itâs a little emotional, itâs bittersweet.â
Since it was a stand-up set, it wasnât clear if it was a real announcement or a joke, and Che hasnât clarified or confirmed.
Che and Jost have been the âWeekend Updateâ anchors for over a decade, since 2014.
Thatâs longer than the iconic team of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who only hosted âWeekend Updateâ together for two years (from 2004 to 2006) despite leaving a strong impression.
âTheyâve been the longest-running update anchors for a while,â one fan pointed out on Reddit, adding, âThereâs expected to be a decent turnover after the 50th season of people who stayed to be a part of it. Add in his wife hosting the season finale and I wouldnât be surprised if it is his last episode.â
Scarlett Johansson, 40, who has been married to Jost since 2020, will lead this weekendâs episode, with musical guest Bad Bunny.
Many fans believe that since the actress is hosting the Season 50 finale, thatâs a setup for Jostâs swan song.
During a 2024 interview on âThe Howard Stern Show,â Jost and Che were asked about leaving âSNL.â
âI wanna leave because I just feel like I miss stand-up,â Che said.
Jost chimed in: âI feel like, first of all, youâre very good at it and it is rewarding for you, even though youâre often like, âI want to do other stuff.ââ
Che confessed, âItâs hard to imagine being gone. My brain is on the clock of âSaturday Night Live.ââ
âPeople get burned out in ways you donât see,â Jost went on. âPeople get burned out in a different way, when you have that level of heat for a while. Itâs hard to keep doing it.â
When Stern asked if they would do âWeekend Updateâ without each other if the other person left, both said no.
âSaturday Night Liveâ Season 50 ends on May 17.
