Season 2 of Landman brings a powerful new dynamic with the arrival of Sam Elliott, and according to Billy Bob Thornton, the challenge wasn’t acting — it was emotion.
Landman’s Billy Bob Thornton details ‘hardest part’ of working with Sam Elliot in season 2
EXCLUSIVE: Landman season 2 has arrived on Paramount Plus, with Sam Elliot joining the cast as a new character – and Billy Bob Thornton has opened up about working with his old friend.

Landman has returned for its second series, with Hollywood legend Sam Elliott joining the cast of the hit Paramount Plus drama.
Billy Bob Thornton, who plays lead character Tommy Norris in Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s latest show, has revealed his thoughts on Elliott’s new role in Landman.
After watching episode one of series two, viewers have worked out that Elliott’s character must surely be Tommy’s father, after he was introduced as Thomas.
In an exclusive interview, Thornton teased Elliott’s character will have a significant part to play this series, as well as revealing the ‘hardest part’ of working with an old friend.
Asked if Elliott will be a major player this series, Thornton confirmed: “Yes, for sure. He’s playing my dad and it becomes a thing.
“It’s really easy for Sam and myself when we have scenes together, because it’s just two guys relating to each other,” he explained.
“The hardest part is that I love Sam so much that any time I have to say anything bad to him, you know, I feel bad personally.”
During the interview, Thornton also opened up about his close friendships with Demi Moore, who plays Cami Miller, and Gallino actor Andy Garcia, reports the Express.
Speaking about working more closely with Moore in series two, he said: “It was great. We’ve never had the chance to actually see each other in a working relationship on a regular basis, so it’s like I’m with an old pal.
“And the same goes for Sam Elliot, who I’ve known longer than any of them, and Andy Garcia, who I’ve also known forever and I’ve never worked with before.”
Landman follows oil company crisis manager Tommy Norris as he navigates the perilous boomtowns of West Texas whilst juggling complicated personal and professional relationships.
The Paramount Plus synopsis for Landman series two reads: “In Season Two, as oil rises from the earth, so do secrets – and Tommy Norris’s (Thornton) breaking point may be closer than he realizes.
“Facing mounting pressure from M-Tex Oil, Cami Miller (Moore), and the shadow of his kin, survival in West Texas isn’t noble – it’s brutal. And sooner or later something’s got to break.”
Hinting at what’s in store for series two, Thornton revealed: “In terms of characters, you’re going to see a lot more this season of the family dynamic and what’s really at the core of each person.
“Because in the first season, you had Taylor setting up the oil business. We had to explain the oil business, introduce all the characters and all the players in it. And now the audience knows this, so we really get to dive deep.”
Landman series two airs weekly on Sundays on Paramount Plus.
