Nicole Kidman becomes legendary forensic doctor Kay Scarpetta in Amazon Prime Video’s blockbuster series
Amazon Prime Video has just released the first image that has made the community of crime detective novels “crazy”: Nicole Kidman officially transforms into Dr. Kay Scarpetta – the talented, cold and uncompromising forensic doctor in the best-selling book series for over 30 years created by Patricia Cornwell.
With more than 100 million copies sold worldwide, the Scarpetta brand has long been an icon of forensic novels. And now, for the first time, the character has been adapted into a long-running series, promising to be one of the most anticipated television projects of 2026.
The special feature of Scarpetta (2026) lies in its daring two-timeline structure. On one hand, the audience will follow a young Scarpetta (Nicole Kidman in glasses, short hair, white blouse) in the 1990s – the period when she confronts the case that defines both her career and her character. On the other hand, Scarpetta in the present day, returning to Virginia after many years away, is forced to face a new, extremely sophisticated serial killer who seems to know all too well about her dark past.
The supporting cast is equally “powerful”: Jamie Lee Curtis plays Dorothy – Scarpetta’s conflicted and mysterious sister; Bobby Cannavale is the rough but loyal detective Pete Marino; Simon Baker plays Benton Wesley – a criminal behavior analyst and also the man in Scarpetta’s life; while Ariana DeBose transforms into Lucy Farinelli – the female lead’s tech genius but also damaged niece.
Director Liz Friedlander (The Rookie, American Horror Story), executive producer Nicole Kidman (via Blossom Films) and Patricia Cornwell herself promise to deliver a “scary honest” Scarpetta to longtime audiences. Cornwell once declared: “Nicole knows Scarpetta on a molecular level. She doesn’t just act, she is Scarpetta.”
The first image shows Nicole Kidman in an autopsy room with her signature piercing gaze, scalpel in hand, standing over a body on a stainless steel table – a scene that has been in the imagination of millions of readers for three decades. From her psychological scars, Virginia’s deep voice, to her habit of smoking while thinking about the case – every detail is meticulously recreated.
Scarpetta is no longer just a crime series, but also a story about a pioneering woman in a violent, male-dominated world, about broken families, about buried secrets and the price of perfection. With an eight-episode first season, the series is set to premiere globally in late 2026 on Amazon Prime Video.
Get ready, because Dr. Kay Scarpetta is ready to dissect both the criminal world and your own heart.
