What started as a late-night prank has now left a family, school, and entire community devastated.
Jason Hughes, a 40-year-old math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School in Gainesville, Georgia, was killed after confronting a group of teenagers who were vandalizing his property.
According to authorities, the teens were outside Hughes’ home around 11:40 p.m., rolling toilet paper across his yard in what investigators described as a prank. When Hughes heard the commotion, he stepped outside to see what was happening.
Police say Hughes approached the vehicles the teens were getting into as they tried to leave the area. During the chaotic moment, Hughes reportedly tripped and fell into the roadway.
That is when 18-year-old Jayden Wallace allegedly drove away in his pickup truck and ran over the teacher.
The teenagers initially stopped and attempted to provide first aid until emergency crews arrived. Hughes was rushed to Northeast Georgia Medical Center but tragically died from his injuries the following day.
Wallace has been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and littering on private property.
Four other teens who were allegedly involved in the prank were also arrested at the scene. They have been identified as Elijiah Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz. All four face misdemeanor charges for criminal trespass and littering.
Jason Hughes was not just a teacher. He was a mentor, coach, husband, and father. Students and colleagues described him as someone who loved helping others and was deeply involved in the school community.
He leaves behind his wife Laura, who is also a math teacher at the same school, and their two children.
The school district said in a statement that Hughes was a devoted educator who touched the lives of many students and staff.
A memorial was held at the high school as students and teachers gathered to remember a man who had become a pillar in their community.
What was meant to be a prank has now cost a man his life and changed many others forever.

Laura Hughes says her husband was not angry or trying to aggressively confront the teens that night. Instead, she believes he was actually excited and hoping to catch them in the act during what had reportedly been a longstanding prank tradition among students.
According to Laura, Jason loved his students and the family fully supports dropping the charges against the teenagers involved, including the driver who currently faces vehicular homicide charges and could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Laura said her husband cared deeply about the kids in his community and would not want their lives destroyed over what she believes was a terrible accident.
The heartbreaking tragedy has now left a family mourning a husband and father while a group of teenagers face life changing consequences.
