Karmelo Anthony’s mother’s reaction to her son’s verdict was as one would expect.

A jury found the 19-year-old guilty of first-degree murder on Tuesday following the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf last year.

According to the Daily Mail, his mom, Kala Hayes, was shocked at the decision, which left her sobbing.

The conviction could mean that the teenager may never see much farther beyond prison bars.

Anthony, who was 17 at the time of the incident, admitted to stabbing and killing Austin Metcalf last April. The students were involved in a scuffle at a track meet that ended horrifically.

Austin, a football player, reportedly died in his twin brother Hunter Metcalf’s arms.

Anthony fled the scene. He told police he acted in self-defense, which was the basis of his lawyers’ argument during the trial.

He did not take the stand himself.

Karmelo Anthony Verdict Had Both Families In Tears

The court heard final arguments from both sides this Tuesday, after which the jury was sequestered and returned a verdict.

They found the teen guilty.

“Anthony and his mother began to sob after the verdict was read to the courtroom. Judge John R. Roach asked if the court needed to take a break,” the Mail reports.

“Anthony’s lawyer asked if he could take him somewhere before the judge reminded him that he is now guilty and in the custody of the sheriff’s office.”

The outlet added that the rest of Anthony’s family was also in tears.

“Anthony’s mother continued to weep as she leant over in her seat,” they continued.

According to the Mail, Austin Metcalf’s family smiled when they heard the verdict, with family and friends crying tears of relief.
