VEHICLE BELONGING TO THE MURDERED KRUGER NATIONAL PARK COUPLE FOUND IN XAI-XAI AT MOZAMBIQUE
Police are closing in on the suspects behind the brutal murder of retired Mossel Bay couple Ernst Marais (71) and his wife, Dina Marais (73), after their stolen vehicle was allegedly traced to Mozambique at Xaixai which is the border towards Giriyondo gate of the Kruger National Park.
Investigators believe the couple’s green Ford Ranger was recovered in Xai-Xai, approximately 350km from the crime scene, as the cross-border investigation gathers momentum.
The couple’s bodies were discovered on 22 May 2026 near Crooks Corner, at the confluence of the Levubu and Limpopo rivers in the remote Pafuri section of the Kruger National Park. Authorities confirmed that both victims had sustained multiple stab wounds, while their vehicle was missing, prompting murder and hijacking investigations.
Investigators believe the vehicle may have been driven through the bush and across the unfenced border into Mozambique.
SANParks previously confirmed that tyre tracks suggested the vehicle exited the park through the Mozambican border fence rather than through any official gate or border post.
Limpopo police, SANParks officials and Mozambican authorities are working together as part of an extensive manhunt. Additional rangers and surveillance measures have been deployed in the northern region of the park following what SANParks described as an unprecedented incident in the park’s 100-year history.
While police have not officially confirmed arrests, reports indicate that investigators are making progress and have questioned several individuals as the search for the killers continues.
