Netflix fans cannot wait for an eagerly anticipated Christmas film, with the streaming giant announcing its official release date.
Goodbye June unfolds just before Christmas when mother June’s (portrayed by Helen Mirren) health deteriorates, throwing her four estranged children and their irksome father into turmoil.
They must navigate their complex relationships whilst grappling with the potential loss of their family’s matriarch.
June, described as “Quick-witted”, manages her decline on her own terms, armed with sharp humour, candid honesty, and abundant love.
With Christmas only a few months away, Netflix has revealed the film’s release schedule.
Goodbye June will initially be shown in select UK cinemas from Friday, December 12.
Netflix subscribers will then have to wait until Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, for the festive film to be available on the platform.
Despite the four-month wait for its grand premiere, Goodbye June is anticipated to be worth the patience, particularly given its stellar cast.
Taking on the role of June is the legendary actress Helen Mirren, who is currently making a splash as Elizabeth Best in Netflix’s adaptation of Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club.
She will be accompanied by Mr Turner and Harry Potter star Timothy Spall as June’s husband, alongside Hereditary’s Toni Collette, Lovesick’s Johnny Flynn, The Grudge actress Andrea Riseborough and Titanic legend Kate Winslet as their four siblings.
Further cast members feature The Outlaws’ Stephen Merchant, Ted Lasso’s Jeremy Swift, Banana actor Fisayo Akinade and Code Black’s Raza Jaffrey.
Winslet, celebrated for her performances in numerous productions including Revolutionary Road, Mare of Easttown, Lee and The Holiday, will helm the picture.
She revealed to Deadline: “I think it just feels great to have directed my first film in the 50th year of my life as a woman. It feels good, it feels good.”
Goodbye June represents an especially meaningful venture for Winslet since it was penned by her 21 year old son Joe Anders.
He initially doubted the picture would actually come to fruition as Winslet explained: “He was like ‘Mum, it’s not supposed to be a real thing’ and I was like ‘Well, it’s going to be a real thing and this is what we’re going to do so let’s literally write down who are our dream people to play these parts.’
“And f*****g amazingly, they all said yes. It was completely insane.”
Goodbye June premieres in cinemas on Friday, December 12, and on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, on Netflix.
