A pathology expert took to the stand at Preston Crown Court this week in the murder trial of Jamie Varley, accused of killing 13-month-old Preston Davey.
Home Office pathologist Dr Alison Armour told the jury that Preston had not drowned as Varley had claimed โ her conclusion was that he was the victim of abusive trauma, non-accidental injuries and sexual abuse.
She found bruises to Preston’s forehead, back of throat, mouth and bottom, and bleeding in the lungs. His death was caused by upper airway obstruction โ brought about by a deliberate act of smothering or objects forced into his mouth.
Medics fought for nearly an hour to bring him back. They couldn’t save him.

Varley denies murder, manslaughter, assault by penetration, cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, sexual assault and 13 counts of taking indecent images of a child. The trial continues.
