30 Years. Six Boys. No Answers: The Unsolved Mystery of Frenchman’s Bay

It has been 30 years since six teenage boys — Jay Boyle, Chad Smith, Michael Cummins, Danny Higgins, Robbie Rumboldt, and Jamie Lefebvre — were last seen in the early morning hours of March 17, 1995, near Frenchman’s Bay and Lake Ontario in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. The case remains one of the most baffling disappearances in Canadian history, with no bodies, no boats, and no clear answers.

What happened that night?
The six teenagers reportedly left a basement party around 12:50 a.m., telling friends they were going to “goof around.” Surveillance footage captured three of the boys entering the marina area at 1:48 a.m. Investigators believe the group may have taken a 14-foot Boston Whaler–type boat and a water tricycle out onto the frigid waters of Lake Ontario without life jackets, where the vessel may have capsized.

Despite extensive searches involving marine units, air support, and volunteers, no trace of the boys, their boat, or personal belongings has ever been recovered. The only item found was a gas can, thought to possibly be linked to the missing boat.

Unanswered Questions
The lack of evidence raises more questions than answers:

• If the boys drowned, how could no trace ever surface — no clothing, no debris, no hull?

• Was the “joyride” theory accepted too quickly, or were other possibilities fully explored?

• Nearly three decades later, what new investigative steps could be taken to re-examine this case?
