Fast forward to early July. Preston is rushed to A&E at Blackpool Victoria Hospital with a rash, temperature, and – crucially – noticeable bruising to his head. Varley pulls out his phone and shows them the video. “He’s a clumsy baby learning to walk,” he reportedly claimed, adding details about a squint affecting his coordination. “It made me feel uneasy,” one nurse later told the court, describing how she wished someone had intervened when the toy tipped in the footage. But no immediate action was taken. Police were contacted but stood down.

The Final, Fatal Day: July 27, 2023
On that fateful evening, Varley claimed he left Preston in the bath for a few minutes and returned to find him submerged. He and McGowan-Fazakerley rushed the unresponsive baby to hospital. CCTV captured the frantic arrival: Varley carrying the limp child, paramedics taking over.
