Durian is infamous for its powerful smell and beloved for its creamy, custard-like interior. Growing a durian tree from seed is a project best suited to tropical regions, but it’s possible to start one at home with the right care.

Use fresh durian seeds, as they lose viability quickly—ideally plant them within 48 hours of extracting. Plant seeds horizontally about an inch deep in a pot with rich, well-draining soil. Keep the pot in a warm (above 80°F) and humid location, and water regularly to maintain moisture.

Germination is usually rapid—5 to 7 days. Once the seedling emerges, ensure it receives bright but indirect light. Transplant into a larger pot as it grows. Keep in mind that durian trees can reach massive sizes, so they’re better suited for outdoor gardens in warm climates.

Even if fruiting isn’t feasible, the uniqueness of the plant and the joy of sprouting something so rare makes it an exciting experiment for fruit enthusiasts.
